Meeru Maldives: Leading the Way in Coral Reef Restoration

The Maldives are known for their breathtaking beauty, and a key part of that beauty is the vibrant coral reefs teeming with life. Sadly, these reefs have faced threats in recent years, including coral bleaching events. But at Meeru Island Resort & Spa, we’re taking a stand.!

Meeru boasts one of the most successful coral restoration projects in the Maldives. Launched in 2016 with Save the Beach, a Maldivian conservation organization, this project tackles the challenge head-on. It’s more than just restoring coral; it’s about inspiring positive change.

More Than Just a Reef: A Spark of Awareness
The Meeru Coral Garden isn’t just about growing coral. It’s about fostering a love for these underwater ecosystems and the threats they face. By witnessing the restoration efforts firsthand, guests gain a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of coral reefs and the importance of conservation.

Regeneration, Beauty, and Education: A Winning Combination

The project’s goals are ambitious yet achievable: regenerate reef segments, promote coral growth, and create a magical underwater experience for guests. All while educating them about the crucial role coral plays in the marine environment.

The results speak for themselves. Over 3,000 coral fragments, representing 14 different species, have been planted, thriving at an impressive growth rate of 7 centimetres per year. This thriving underwater haven has become a home to a stunning array of marine life.

A Haven for Marine Life: A Feast for the Senses
The Meeru Coral Garden is teeming with biodiversity. Over 22 fish species call this restored reef home, including some rare finds like the ghost pipefish and the magnificent tetralia coral crab. For those with a keen eye, turtles, rays, and even small reef sharks can be spotted gliding through this underwater paradise.

Meeru’s commitment to coral restoration is a shining example of what can be achieved. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and education, offering a glimpse of hope for the future of our coral reefs.
